About Moissanite
The Story of Moissanite
In 1893, a Dr. Ferdinand Frederick Henri Moissan, an eminent scientist (who later won the Nobel Prize for chemistry), discovered brilliant, sparkling crystals while examining geological samples taken from a meteor crater located in Arizona. These crystals, considered "diamonds from space" have the property of silicon carbide- almost impossible to find in nature.
In 1905, a gem expert and mineralogist George Kunz, suggested to rename these crystals "Moissanite", in honour of the man who discovered it. The rarity of these crystals in fashionable jewelry is now available through a patented process only from the house of Charles & Colvard.
